Do teeth whiteners actually work?
Whitening toothpastes? Not really. Teeth whitening strips or gels? Yes, some of these can be very effective. Solid uses the same ingredient dentists use when they whiten teeth. Here’s a great article from Consumer NZ if you’re keen to get into the details.
Should I whiten my teeth if I need fillings or other dental work?
It’s best to get other dental treatment done first, then whiten your teeth after this is complete.
How does it work exactly?
The active ingredient is 6.9% hydrogen peroxide in a clear gel. This ingredient releases tiny oxygen bubbles which break down stains and discolouration present in your enamel. There’s no harsh scrubbing or abrasives involved.
How long does whitening last?
Depends how much you love coffee, red wine, and curries 😉 But usually, results last 6 months. You can always do a “top-up” application every now and then throughout this period.
Can I use Solid Teeth Whitening gel in my existing whitening trays?
Yes, you can.
Does teeth whitening work on all types of stains?
Built up surface stains from food, drink, or cigarettes? Yes, definitely. Lifelong deep or internal stains (for example tetracycline staining)? Not so much. You may wish to speak to your dentist about other options if this is the case.
Can natural remedies whiten teeth?
Baking soda, charcoal and oil pulling go in and out of fashion, but they’re not proven and can be harsh and/or ineffective. We say: stick with the science.
Can I whiten my teeth if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
It’s not recommended, mostly because there’s not enough research. Better to play it safe.
How effective are teeth whiteners?
Effective when used as directed. There’s no harsh scrubbing or abrasives involved. The active ingredient, hydrogen peroxide, is very safe and well-studied in dentistry. Some people may get a bit of sensitivity, but it’s usually mild and temporary. Always check with your dentist if unsure.
How old do you need to be to whiten your teeth?
We recommend waiting until at least 16 years of age. It’s not suitable for kids who have their baby teeth.
